During my journalism training, I spent many a long evening studying Media law looking into all the legal dangers that exist for journalists and writers. One book in particular became essential reading during that time. That book was McNae’s Essential Law for journalists.
I’ve was reminded of this book earlier in the week when I came across this post on socialmediatoday looking at copyright.
Copyright was one of the key topics I studied, and which featured in my Law exam. This is a really useful article which explains copyright in a simple straightforward manner.
Nobody’s expecting you to be a legal expert, and you don’t need to know everything, but if you’re creating written content, it’s certainly useful to have a general idea of some of the basic legal issues that exist. Copyright is one of them, so I’d definitely recommend brushing up on this area.
The last thing you want is to get into legal trouble because of something you’ve written, but you also need to know how to protect the content you’re producing.
