Explaining Search to people who know nothing about it!

Last year, I had a job interview for an SEO content role. After the first interview, I was called  back for the second stage. For the second interview, I was asked to give a small presentation (5 slides and some bullet points) describing what SEO is.

I put together my PowerPoint presentation and wrote a few notes for each slide. What was interesting was trying to talk about SEO in a way that was short and to the point, and aimed at an audience that might not know anything about SEO.

I was a good exercise to do. When you work in digital marketing, it’s easy to think that everyone knows what SEO is. On-page optimisation, link building and crawling. The fact is, they don’t!

Knowing how to talk about SEO to family, friends, work colleagues, and clients in an easy, simply understood way is a really important skill to have.

It’s why I found this video from Google really helpful. It explains how Search works in just 5 minutes. For digital marketers, content writers and SEOs, there’s nothing in the video you won’t already know, but I like these videos because they give you ideas on how to talk about SEO practices and principles to people unfamiliar with the topic.

I watched the video above after reading that Google has released a new educational video series on its Search Central YouTube channel.

The goal of the series is to explain search complexities in an understandable way. The video below is the first in the series.

I found this video focuses more on the technical aspects of Google’s search functionality.  I wouldn’t go into this type of detail, speaking with family or friends.

But in a professional work environment, where you’re dealing with clients, senior figures within a business or colleagues from other departments, these type of videos are really helpful.
